Hyderabad: Members of Telangana Poultry Breeders Association (TPBA) on Thursday expressed their gratitude to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao for taking the decision to sell 4 lakh metric tonnes of maize to poultry units in the State at a discounted price of Rs 1,800 per 100 kgs.

The poultry sector in the State was feeling the heat due to the rising maize prices which resulted in a steep increase in prices of poultry feed across the country. “We are grateful to the Chief Minister’s large heartedness, which will go a long way in saving the livelihood of lakhs of poultry farmers in Telangana,” said TPBA president Dr G Ranjith Reddy.

According to Ranjith Reddy, maize accounts for 65 to 70 per cent of costs in poultry sector in India. Due to sharp rise in prices of maize this year, the industry’s production costs soared. At present maize was being traded at record levels of Rs 2,100 per quintal as against earlier price that hovered between Rs 1,300 and Rs 1,400.

“Telangana is the only State in India that has given minimum support price for maize to its farmers. Despite many difficulties, the State government has also extended the same support to the poultry farmers by deciding to provide maize at discounted prices,” Reddy said.

Apart from TPBA, senior office-bearers of Telangana Poultry Federation (TPF) E Pradeep Kumar and others thanked the Chief Minister for the support.
