Namakkal bags its first export order for eggs from Malaysia

Namakkal first export order for eggs from Malaysia

Namakkal: In a first, an egg exporter from Namakkal has bagged orders from Malaysia for Indian table eggs.

P V Senthil, managing director, Kaveris Bio Proteins Private Limited, said he received the export order on Wednesday from Dr D Biswas, regional officer, animal quarantine and certification services – southern region, in Chennai.

He said municipal administration minister K N Nehru would flag off the first consignment flight at Trichy airport at 5pm on Thursday.

He said Malaysian agriculture and food security minister Haslina Abdul Hamid had recently approached the Indian embassy in Kuala Lumpur, seeking support to export Indian eggs to their country urgently. “Malaysia has been facing a shortage of table eggs for the past few months.

As chicken and eggs are part of their staple food, it is considered a serious food security issue by the new government led by prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The Malaysian population is sensitive to the availability and prices of chicken and eggs, making it a politically sensitive matter.”

Subsequently, B N Reddy, high commissioner of India, Kuala Lumpur, shot off a letter to the Union government on Monday (Dec 12), detailing the shortage of eggs in Malaysia and their interest in importing the same from India.

“Based on the Malaysian minister’s request, the agriculture and processed food products export development authority of India and the animal quarantine and certification services, along with us, worked together to expedite the certification processes,” Senthil said.

He said about two lakh eggs would be exported to Malaysia from Namakkal on Thursday. “It is a promising new market for us.”
