ERODE: A broiler poultry farm caught fire near Bhavani in Erode district on Sunday. The fire is estimated to have caused damages amounting to Rs23 lakh.
The fire broke out around 10 am at a broiler farm belonging to C Muthusamy, 45, of Mettunasuvampalayam near Bhavani. A short circuit in an electrical line passing through the broiler poultry farm is believed to have caused the fire.
“I was feeding the broiler chicks when I heard a blast from the wiring,” Muthusamy said. He added, the fire suddenly engulfed the entire broiler poultry farm within a few minutes. He, however, managed to escape unhurt and alerted the fire and rescue services. Personnel from the Bhavani fire station rushed to the spot and put out the fire after an hour-long struggle.
Initial investigation revealed that a building in the broiler poultry farm worth Rs18 lakh was damaged while 5,000 broiler chicks worth Rs5 lakh were killed in the fire
A case has been registered and further inquiry is on.
