India and the US have settled a long-pending trade dispute over poultry products, marking the end of the only remaining tiff at the WTO, a joint statement issued after a meeting between PM Modi and President Joe Biden on Friday said.
In 2012, the US had filed a case in the WTO’s dispute settlement body challenging the ban on import of American poultry, arguing it was inconsistent with international rules. While the ruling was against India, New Delhi was unable to implement the decision within the stipulated time, resulting in the US demanding damages. For a while, the two nations have been discussing ways to mutually resolve the dispute.
